“Dream Big” This Summer at the Shepherdstown Library

June 4 is the first day to sign up to attend the following free events; Thursday, June 14 at the Shepherdstown Elementary School (SES) gym, the Society for Creative Anachronism will present a medieval program with sword fighting at 10:30 a.m. For ages five through 12. Tuesday, June 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the SES gym, Jerry Schneider will present “The Wonderful World of Bats!” which will include a tee shirt craft. For ages six through 12. Wednesday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Shepherdstown Community Club’s War Memorial Building (WMB): Ages two through twelve are invited to make a fairy wand and a bit of magic, and join in a circle dance with Diana Gorham. Tuesday, July 10 at the War Memorial Building (WMB) at 10:30 a.m., there will be a magician in a show with lots of audience participation and comedy (maximum of 80 children, ages 3 through twelve). Wednesday, July 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the War Memorial Building (WMB), storytellers from the Rainbow Company will present “Jack and the Beanstalk.” They will bring costumes for children from the audience who volunteer to perform in the play. For ages two through 12. Wednesday, August 1 at the War Memorial Building (WMB) at 10:30 a.m., ages two through twelve are invited to a performance of “Sleeping Beauty” presented by Nancy Jenks and her ballet company.

Children may also pick up a reading log in the Library’s Children’s Department beginning June 4, borrow library books, and earn prizes for reading (or being read to). The Shepherdstown Library will be closed Monday, May 28, Memorial Day.

Come to the Clarion Fitness Center in Shepherdstown for SALGA YO, a new class with Jeanne Fisher which incorporates the gentle stretching of yoga before and after 30 minutes of Salsa and other Latin-based dance cardio will be held at the Clarion Fitness Center on Wednesdays at 9:10 a.m. Call for more information at 304-870-7011.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. The Old Opera House 2012 Summer Youth production will be a wonderful new non-musical version of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame written by Craig W. Stump and directed by Andy Kiser (who most recently directed Scheherazade, Legend of the Arabian Nights and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for the Old Opera House). Roles are available for approximately 25 young performers age 8 and above. No prior experience is necessary to audition. Auditions will be held at 6 p.m. each evening.

Goose Route Arts Collaborative is pleased to present a Performance Caf on at 8 p.m. The event takes place at the Shepherdstown Opera House, 131 W. German Street. Featured performers include Adam Booth, storytelling; the Cam Millar Ensemble, original music; Monica Larson, new media; kittyclarkmoves, contemporary dance; and visiting artists Katherine Ferrier from Bethlehem, N.H., and Pamela Vail from Lancanster, Pa., improvisational dance artists.
