The Ryan Film Institute will be hosting its 6th Student Film Festival, which will allow the community to view and vote on their favorite works at the show.

Created in 2007, the Ryan Film Institute has striven to teach its students the ins and outs of filmmaking by showing students how to plan, record and edit their own works.

The upcoming festival will allow students to showcase their 60-second commercials and under-five-minute short films.

After showing the films, the audience members will be able to vote on their favorite film, director, actor, along with other categories.

Katherine Ryan, the Ryan Film Institute’s president, says that she is excited at the opportunity her students have to show off the films on which they have worked so hard.

“It’s enjoyable to be recognized and show off your work to your peers,” Ryan said.

Ryan encourages the local community to support the young film makers in their pursuits by coming to the festival to watch and vote on their favorite films.

“You can see some fun and interesting short films and commercials created from the imaginative minds of our students,” Ryan said.

Attendees will have the chance to view films such as “Joe Taxi: A Wild Ride,” a short film by Kate Valaike that features Christian Lopez, the American Idol finalist or Kevin Alegret’s short film “Celebrating Shepherdstown’s 250th.”

The festival will start at 6:30 on Saturday Aug. 11 at Knutti Hall in Shepherdstown, with a pizza party, followed by the premiere of the films and the voting of the audience’s favorite films.

The festival costs $10 for students, $20 for adults and is free for all students of the Ryan Film Institute.
