KThe Trinity Episcopal Church’s Tuesday afternoon sewing circle has put the finishing touches on Shepherdstown’s 250-year anniversary commemorative quilt.

Working since May 2011, the group of approximately 25 ladies have been piecing together sections of the quilt, which will honor the town’s 250 years of history, through signatures and images. Wendy Mosley, who has acted as coordinator for the quilt project, explained its special features. It includes stitched images of the state bird, state flower, the state butterfly, fish and tree and a blue and gold border in honor of Shepherd University.

It also includes what she called “iconic town images,” like moments captured at Shepherdstown Streetfest by photographer Melanie Brownsmith- Hutzler, as well as pictures of the “little house,” McMurran Hall and the Rumsey Monument.

Janet Maple designed the quilt, which is pulled together by a center block featuring the Shepherdstown 250-year anniversary logo.

According to information provided by the Shepherdstown 250 committee, former Chronicle staff member Jennifer Wabnitz suggested the idea for a signature quilt as the town was considering choices for a “legacy project.”

In early 2010, the 250 committee commissioned the Tuesday craft group for the project and a signature drive was launched during the 2011 Christmas in Shepherdstown celebration.

Last Tuesday, Mosley and he her fellow group members did some final work on the quilt, readying it before its presentation to the town this fall.

“Today we are doing that last hand-stitching around the binding,” she said.

Mosley resides downtown in one oldest houses in Shepherdstown and said she felt she was happy to be able to participate in the 250 celebration in some way.

“I’m glad to be a part of it,” she said.

The Tuesday craft group, which was formed in 2007 by Sarah Drennen, meets every Tuesday in the Trinity Episcopal Church meeting hall to socialize and work on various sewing, knitting, embroidering project or other crafts.

Embroidered blocks for the 250 quilt were designed and crafted by Noreen Albright, Mary Alvarez, Rosamund Garner, Diane Kradel, Carol Lapham, Kris MacNichols, Bonnie Sitman, Doreen Wootton and Suzy Yates and Wendy Mosley. Mosley, Maple and Albright also worked on the quilting, as well Loretta Homan.

The Tuesday group meets every week from one to four at the Trinity Church Fellowship Hall. The 250 quilt will be presented to the town at a ceremony concluding the 250-year anniversary celebration on Nov. 11, 2012.
