These free programs resume the week of Sept.17: “Lap Babies and Ones” will be on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and the “Twos” will meet from 11:15 to noon on Tuesdays. The “Threes, Fours, and Fives” program on Wednesdays offers parents a choice of 11:15 to noon, or 1:15 to 2 p.m. Ages 6 through 12 may attend the “After School Program” on Thursdays from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Sept. 29 is the deadline to rent space to participate in the “Arts, Attic and Antiques Bazaar” hosted by the Friends of the Library, to be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in the War Memorial Building. Good, salable items are needed for this fundraiser but please visit the Library’s Adult Department or call (304) 876-2783 for details on the procedure for donations.

Children are still welcome to submit a completed summer reading log to receive a packet of prizes, and are reminded that the coupons for One Two Kangaroo Toy Store and the Sweet Shop Bakery expire on September 30.

Gently used DVDs for adults and children are requested. Either domestic or foreign films are welcome. Please drop off your donated DVDs at the Library.

The Library Board is seeking suggestions about future uses to be made of our present building at German and King Streets. If you are interested in this Market House Re-Use Committee, or in another committee (which will study safety along Route 480 at Lowe Drive, which may become the entrance driveway to the new library) please call (304) 876-2783.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. Concert and Workshops on Old Time Music with Bruce Molsky and the Bee Eaters! We will hold our first concert of the season with old time fiddle master Bruce Molsky and the hot, young, new acoustic group, the Bee Eaters with Grand National fiddle champions Tashina and Tristan Clarridge and hammered dulcimer player, Simon Chrisman at 8 p.m. at Reynolds Hall. Crystal Bowl concert with Ann Craig, 6 to 6:40 p.m., free, open to all. Ann Craig performs a “sound meditation” using seven quartz crystal bowls that fill Harmony with an energetic yet peaceful vibration that soothes and aligns mind, body, and soul. Participants can sit in chairs or lie on mats. Concerts last 30-45 minutes. Donations gratefully accepted, but not necessary. (Harmony Healing Arts Center, 211 E. New St.)

First Friday Coffeehouse will kickoff a seventh season on Sept. 7 with The Big Open Mic fundraiser at Trinity Orchard House on Route 45, four miles from the four-way stop in Shepherdstown. Doors open for social time and sign-up at 7:30 p.m. All open mic participants should be there early to get a slot to perform three to five songs at one of the area`s premier listening rooms

Sept. 8

The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is having their annual Indoor Yard Sale 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town, located at 221 East Washington St. Come check out the large variety of items and help less fortunate cats and dogs in our area. All proceeds will benefit the homeless pets waiting for adoption at the Animal Welfare Society shelter on Leetown Pike, near the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The first Margaret Anderson Memorial 5K will be held on the towpath at the C&O Canal. The 3.1 mile run/walk will start at Antietam Creek Campground and finish at Ferry Hill Plantation in Sharpsubrg, Md. All proceeds go to help Anderson’s family care for her two young daughters. Anderson, a park ranger, was killed in the line of duty Jan. 1, 2012 in Mount Rainier National Park. Parking, registration and packet pickup at Ferry Hill from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Cost is $25 on day of race; $20 before. South Jefferson Public Library is excited to host local author, Lyn Widmyer for a book talk and signing at 2 p.m. Widmyer will be reading from her new book, “Chasing Cows: I’m Not in the Suburbs Anymore”, as well as answering questions and signing copies of her book. The Jefferson County Organization of Democratic Women will meet at 4 p.m. on the lower level of the Old Charles Town Library, Samuel Street entrance. The agenda will be an open dialogue with members of our organization running for political office. This is an opportunity for all citizens of Jefferson County to hear

Sept. 14

Edgar Cayce-Based Exercises with Melanie Climis. Gentle, low impact lymphatic exercises. 6-7 p.m., free. Come learn Peter Van Daam’s series of simple lymph-cleansing exercises drawn from the recommendations in the Edgar Cayce readings. Sept. 15

Prana for Peter: Yoga and Kirtan at The Train Station, benefit for Peter Yates, 6-8:30 p.m., (yoga suitable for all levels). Peter Yates faces a very long recovery following a vehicular accident

July 23 in which he broke nearly 20 bones involving, among other areas, his spine and knees. Suggested donations of $15-$20 (all of which will go to Peter Yates to help defray medical bills)

Sept. 18

West Virginia University Hospitals-East and the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center Eastern Division will sponsor a community mini-medical school program on ways to prevent heart disease.

The seminar, titled Preventing Your Heart Attack 101, will be held in the WVU Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center on the City Hospital campus. Diet, weight management and cholesterol control are some of the topics that will be discussed. Sign-in for the community mini-medical school program begins at 6:30 p.m., with the program to follow from 7 8 p.m. Light refreshments will be offered at the conclusion of the seminar.

Sept. 19 & 26

Shepherdstown Area Independent Living, SAIL invites members of the community to join friends and neighbors for coffee and conversation to learn more about our “village.” SAIL is a non-profit whose mission is to enable its members to remain active, connected, independent and in their homes and community as long as possible. Sept. 21

The 8th Annual Concert for the benefit of the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association Inc. (SBPA) will be held at 7:30 p.m. Entertainment will begin at 8 p.m. Don Oehser and Todd Coyle will provide the entertainment. A $10 donation is requested at the door. There will be free food, adult beverages for a small donation and soft drinks. An auction with Civil War interest is also planned. Sept. 21, 22 & 23

“The Anvil”, a dramatic play about the trial of the fiery abolitionist, John Brown, is being shown the weekend of Sept. 21 and 22 at 7:00 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. The setting for the play is in the Charles Town Courthouse, where Brown was actually tried in 1859. Joe Yates, a Shepherdstown resident, is directing the play this year and is portraying John Brown. Other local residents of Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry are members of the cast as well as some from Berkeley County. There is limited seating so get your tickets early by calling 304 876-1825. Tickets are also available at the Charles Town Library, Visitor’s Center and Museum and the Dish American Bistro. Prices for the performances are $15 for adults and $12 for those over 60 and under 20.

Sept. 22

The City of Charles Town will hold its annual Heritage Day Street Festival starting at 10a.m. and going to 5 p.m. on Washington Street and a BBQ at Jefferson Memorial Park at 6p.m. with the Touche Band and Show. Come and enjoy live music, crafts, farmers market, history tours and much, much more.
