A 50-voice community choir, composed of singers from Shepherdstown, Sharpsburg and nearby areas will present “Antietam: A Choral Meditation” twice on Sept. 23 at 3 and 6 p.m. at the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, 100 W. Washington Street. Admission is free, but seating is limited.

The concert will be in remembrance of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam and its aftermath in Shepherdstown, when nearly every building served as a hospital for the thousands of wounded Confederate soldiers.

Under the direction of Shepherd University faculty member Dr. Georgiann Toole, the music will include “Working for the Dawn of Peace” (Ron Jeffers), “At the River” (Aaron Copland), “Hard Times Come Again No More (Stephen Foster), “Ashokan Farewell” (Jay Ungar, from the PBS series, “The Civil War”) and other works.

Sponsored by the Shepherdstown Ministerial Association and the Antietam Women’s Ensemble, the concert is part of Shepherdstown’s year-long 250th Anniversary celebration and joins the Antietam Remembrance Walk as one of the major events of September.
