Remembering Antietam
On Sunday, Sept. 15, the Antietam Remembrance Walk from Sharpsburg, Md. to Shepherdstown will take place to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. The three mile walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Sharpsburg and move along the approximate route taken by thousands of wounded men on their way to receive whatever help they could find.
There are two parking areas in Shepherdstown the first in Lot A – Shepherd University campus at the corner of Princess and High Streets. The second overflow lot is at St. Agnes Church on Rt. 480 and Washington St. There is also parking in Sharpsburg at the Sharpsburg Elementary School on MD Rt. 34. (Shepherdstown parking is preferable.)
A free bus service will begin at 4 p.m from Shepherdstown to the Sharpsburg Train Station and continue every 20 minutes. Volunteers will be on duty to direct at parking areas. Buses will return folks to Sharpsburg until 9 p.m. The walk begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Train Station.
The churches in town will ring their bells at noon on Sunday, Sept. 15 to start the beginning of Antietam Remembrance Week.
Shepherd University Dining Services will offer a hot dog/hamburger dinner in front of the Dining Hall on North King St. Cost for the a la carte dinner will be $6 or less.
