Sept. 29 is the deadline to rent space to participate in the “Arts, Attic and Antiques Bazaar” hosted by the Friends of the Library, to be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in the War Memorial Building. Good, salable items are needed for this fundraiser but please visit the Library’s Adult Department or call (304) 876-2783 for details on the procedure for donations.

Children are still welcome to submit a completed summer reading log to receive a packet of prizes, and are reminded that the coupons for One Two Kangaroo Toy Store and the Sweet Shop Bakery expire on September 30.

Gently used DVDs for adults and children are requested. Either domestic or foreign films are welcome. Please drop off your donated DVDs at the Library.

The Library Board is seeking suggestions about future uses to be made of our present building at German and King Streets. If you are interested in this Market House Re-Use Committee, or in another committee (which will study safety along Route 480 at Lowe Drive, which may become the entrance driveway to the new library) please call (304) 876-2783.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. The 8th Annual Concert for the benefit of the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association Inc. (SBPA) will be held at 7:30 p.m. Entertainment will begin at 8 p.m. Don Oehser and Todd Coyle will provide the entertainment. A $10 donation is requested at the door. There will be free food, adult beverages for a small donation and soft drinks. An auction with Civil War interest is also planned. OM for PEACE (observance of United Nations International Peace Day), 6-6:40 p.m., free event. Sept. 21, 22 & 23

“The Anvil”, a dramatic play about the trial of the fiery abolitionist, John Brown, is being shown the weekend of Sept. 21 and 22 at 7:00 p.m. and Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. The setting for the play is in the Charles Town Courthouse, where Brown was actually tried in 1859. Joe Yates, a Shepherdstown resident, is directing the play this year and is portraying John Brown. Other local residents of Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry are members of the cast as well as some from Berkeley County. There is limited seating so get your tickets early by calling 304 876-1825. Tickets are also available at the Charles Town Library, Visitor’s Center and Museum and the Dish American Bistro. Prices for the performances are $15 for adults and $12 for those over 60 and under 20.

Sept. 22

The Harmony Healing Arts Center is hosting its first-ever Open House from 12-4 p.m. There will be many and varied activities all are geared to showing the community what the center is about-yoga, massage, tai chi, and many related healing arts. All Harmony practitioners will be on hand to describe and/or demonstrate what they do. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be offered. Harmony Healing Arts Center, 211 E. New St.

The City of Charles Town will hold its annual Heritage Day Street Festival starting at 10a.m. and going to 5 p.m. on Washington Street and a BBQ at Jefferson Memorial Park at 6p.m. with the Touche Band and Show. Come and enjoy live music, crafts, farmers market, history tours and much, much more.

The town of Shepherdstown has declared this day as “Upton Martin Day.” Members of the Martin family will be on hand to offer a presentation to the Mayor. Tours of the Thomas Shepherd Grist Mill will be offered throughout the day.

Sept. 24

Shepherdstown Film Society, in conjunction with Shepherd Universitys Appalachian Heritage Writer in Residence program, will show “Winter’s Bone” at 7 p.m. at Reynolds Hall. Discussion led by Dr. Amy DeWitt. Admission is free. For more info go to www.shepherdstownfimsociety.org.

Sept. 26

Shepherdstown Area Independent Living, SAIL invites members of the community to join friends and neighbors for coffee and conversation to learn more about our “village.” SAIL is a non-profit whose mission is to enable its members to remain active, connected, independent and in their homes and community as long as possible. Sept. 28 and 29

The Charles Town Library’s Annual Fall Book Sale will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. Friends of the Charles Town Library (see our website for information on becoming a Friend – www.ctlibrary.org/octl) will have a half hour to buy books before the sale opens to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The sale reopens on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Books in all subject areas, from bestseller to oldies, but goodies and everything in-between, will be for sale. Hardbacks are $2; trade paperbacks, $1 and mass market paperbacks, $.50. Fill a bag with books for $10, two bags for $15, three bags for $20, etc.

Sept. 30

The South Jefferson Public Library offers another in its series of “Music at the Library” performances. Set Theory, featuring special guest Chris Vadala, will perform a free concert on the lawn of the library beginning at 3 p.m. The library is located at 49 Church Street, Corner of Church and Summit Point roads, in Summit Point. The audience is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and to please refrain from smoking on library property. Refreshments will be served. Come early to experience local artist William McGinnis exhibit acrylic paintings in the library’s meeting room. Good Shepherd Caregivers will hold their 5th annual Tastes From Around the World at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a wonderful evening of finely prepared international delicacies with complementary wines. Proceeds help provide free volunteers services to older or disabled residents of Jefferson County. Tickets are $60 or $100 for two. RSVP today by calling 304-876-3325.

Oct. 8

Good Shepherd Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers will hold its annual corporation meeting at 7 p.m. on at Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall. All members are urged to attend and the public is welcome. A reception will immediately follow.
