Yoga for beginners

By Staff | Sep 21, 2012

For those who have thought about trying yoga but don’t know where to start, Harmony Healing Arts Center in Shepherdstown is offering three new opportunities for yoga beginners this fall. On Saturday mornings, from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m., Diana Brubaker, a local massage therapist and certified yoga teacher, offers “Peaceful Yoga”, a perfect class in which to cultivate a safe and meditative yoga practice.

On Tuesday nights, from 5:30 to 6:40 p.m., Harmony co-owner Terry Lindsay teaches “Traditional Yoga,” also a safe haven for those new to yoga. The class size is small and allows Lindsay to give extra attention to those brand new to yoga. Each week a balance of basic to intermediate level postures are practiced, followed by relaxation, breath work, and meditation.

Starting Sept. 27, on Thursday afternoons from 3-4 p.m., Yoga teacher, author, and holistic counselor Lisha Simester will teach “Golden Yoga.” This class, aimed at ages 50 years and older, is based on a comprehensive and accessible holistic yoga program, which demonstrates how to safely stretch, strengthen, and lengthen the body. Simester will teach a gentle yoga style that will encourage a suppler, healthier spine along with greater core strength.

Each of these new classes will enhance balance, stamina, flexibility and well-being. The three classes are ideal for experienced yogis as well, as each teachers offer variations in traditional poses. For more information, visit www.harmonyhealingarts.org or call Terry at 304-582-0179. Join a Harmony yoga class anytime throughout the fall session. Harmony Healing Arts Center is located at 211 East New Street in Shepherdstown.
