The Library will be open on Oct. 8, Columbus Day.

The Library Board is seeking suggestions about future uses to be made of our present building at German and King Streets. If you are interested in this Market House Re-Use Committee, the next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Shepherdstown Library. For information about another committee (which will study safety along Route 480 at Lowe Drive, which may become the entrance driveway to the new library) please call the Library at (304) 876-2783.

Need ideas for Halloween costumes or parties? Books for all ages will be on display all month in the Children’s Department. Ages 6 through 12 are invited to hear scary stories and create spooky crafts Thursdays at 4 p.m. all October.

Teen Read Week is Oct. 14 – 20. Check out our newest graphic novels, bestsellers, vampire fiction, steampunk and science fiction titles.

The last day for children to submit a completed summer reading log and receive a packet of prizes is Oct. 15. (The gift certificate for Four Seasons Books and the coupon for bowling at the University’s Student Center expire on Oct. 31.)

The FOSL Book Group will meet in the Library at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

There will be a Halloween costume parade for all of the children attending Library story times, plus homeschoolers and friends on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Meet outside the Library at 10:30 a.m., or if it is raining, meet inside the chapel of Trinity Episcopal Church at Church and German streets.

Children attending the Threes, Fours, and Fives program are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to our morning and afternoon groups on Oct. 31.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. The Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee (JCDEC) will host its first ever Family “FUN“Raiser from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Jefferson Memorial Park in Charles Town. The event is open to the public and offers a great opportunity to meet Democratic candidates in a fun-filled, family-oriented atmosphere. The Jefferson County Museum will hold its eighth Annual Antiques Appraisal Fair from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., in the library/museum complex at the corner of Washington and N. Samuel streets, Charles Town. Contra Dance: Will Mentor will call lively contras to the New England-based band the Stringrays with fiddle legend Rodney Miller, Max Newman on guitar and Stuart Kenney on base for a program that promises to be an awesome dance! Oct. 8

Good Shepherd Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers will hold its annual corporation meeting at 7 p.m. on at Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall. All members are urged to attend and the public is welcome. A reception will immediately follow.

The Stammtisch will offer the chance to speak German in an informal environment. Learners as well as native speakers of German are all welcome to participate. The more the merrier!!! The next meeting is at 4:30 p.m. in the Blue Moon.

The Tertulia is an informal group that offers students, faculty, and really anyone else who has learned Spanish in the past or is currently studying it now to practice what theyve learned. Dr. John Splaine, scholar of media and politics, will screen examples and discuss the evolution of televised political debates at 7 p.m. at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies, 213 North King Street, Shepherd University.

Notorious concert and workshops: Lauded as “sparkling” and “exhilarating,” Notorious musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer and Larry Unger present a thrilling musical experience in genres that span many continent.
