Shepherd’s vocal groups to present an a cappella choral concert

By Staff | Oct 19, 2012

The Shepherd University Chamber Singers, Men’s Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Women’s Camerata will present an a cappella choral concert on Friday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. in the Frank Center.

The Men’s Choir makes its premiere under its new conductor, Dr. Rob Tudor, director of vocal studies and department of music chair. The Women’s Camerata continues with a work premiered by the Real Group, and a special piece in which the concert choir is joined by the Bell Choir of St. James Catholic Church to bring to life Eric Whitacre’s masterpiece “Cloudburst.” The Vocal Jazz Ensemble has its first full-set premiere with two works made famous by the Manhattan Transfer, and the Chamber Singers will feature Samuel Barber’s three “Reincarnations.”

The Chamber Singers is a mostly a cappella ensemble concentrating in masterpieces of the 20th century. The ensemble consists of 20 to 24 students each year. While most of the members are vocal majors, other music majors and students from around the campus are welcome to audition. Shepherd’s Women’s Camerata is an ensemble of 30 to 35 female singers, comprised of voice majors, music majors, and many students from other disciplines at Shepherd. The Men’s Choir is an ensemble of 12 to 15 male voices singing jazz, doo-wop, barbershop and classical male choir literature.

General admission to the concert is $10; $5 for faculty, staff, and students 18 and under; and free to Shepherd students and Friends of Music MAC cardholders. Admission and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The box office opens one hour prior to performance.
