After months of renovation, the Shepherdstown Lutheran Parish showed off the new Caring Cupboard.

At an open house on Oct. 20, the Caring Cupboard was re-introduced to the public by the volunteers from the Parish. The Caring Cupboard, which operates out of the back of the Lutheran Parish House, supplies food to kids so they don’t go hungry. The renovations done provide more space for food donated to the program.

“Last year, we were able to fit about 73 bags worth of food,” said Jennifer Perrotte, the secretary at the Parish House,” After the renovation, we are able to fit 84 bags worth of food.”

Many of the volunteers are members of the church. However, according to Perrotte, the group of volunteers is not limited to the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

“We have volunteers from multiple churches throughout the Shepherdstown area,” said Perrotte, “Right now, we have around 30 volunteers.”

The Caring Cupboard began back in August 2010, around the time kids returned to school. Along with partnerships with other churches like St. Agnes Catholic Church and Shepherdstown Presbyterian, the Shepherdstown Lutheran Parish teamed up Shepherdstown Elementary School (which started in 2010) and Shepherdstown Middle School (which started in 2011) to help distribute food to needy children. The program has also recently started a partnership with Shepherd University.

The Parish is continuing taking donations from the community. The list of food items they are taking as donations can be found on the Parish House’s website at www.shepherdstownlutheranparish.org.
