Sixty of Shepherdstown’s historic families have registered to participate in the town’s 250th Anniversary Coming Home Parade, which will be held starting a 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11.

The parade is one of a series of events that will be held weekend of November 9-11 to mark the conclusion of the town’s year-long 250th anniversary celebrations.

It will be focused on descendants and representatives of the town’s historic families, with music provided by fifes and drums from the Shepherdstown Middle School Band and drummers from the Jefferson High School Band.

The families participating in the parade will include: Banks, Bedinger, Beltzhoover, Billmyer, Boetler, Buckles, Byers, Carter, Chapline, Cookus, Dandridge, Entler, Fleming, Folk, Hawn, Hedges, Hendricks, Hoge, Humrickhouse, Knode, Knott, Lafferty, Lemen, Link, Lowe, Lucas, Marshall, Martin, McKee, McMurran, Morgan, Osbourn, Quigley, Ray, Rickard, Rumsey, Schley, Sheetz, Shepherd, Shindler, Show, Shutt, Skinner, Snyder, Staley, Swearingen, Thompson, Turner, Walper, Weiss, Welshans, Willis, Wyncoop, Yeasley.

Other special events scheduled for the weekend include the following:

On Friday, Nov. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, a community potluck party at the Community Club, featuring a potluck supper and music by Sacred Groove.

On Saturday, Nov. 10 there will be a 10 a.m. Dedication of a plaque to the town’s founder, Thomas Shepherd, at. at the Shepherd family graveyard on New Street.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., there will be an open house at the old Thomas Shepherd Grist Mill on High Street.

Sunday, Nov. 11, the finale begins with a 1 p.m. Model steam engine demonstration for children and parents at the Entler Hotel by Nicholas Rumsey of Richmond, Va., a member of the family of steamboat pioneer James Rumsey.

The Coming Home Parade on German Street begins at 3 p.m. following at 4 with a closing ceremony in front of McMurran Hall. From 5-7 p.m., visitors can enjoy the Coming Home Soup Fest and wrap up the evening from 7 to 9 p.m. with an After the Soups Hope House with music and refreshments at the town’s historic train station.

Everyone is invited to all the events. All are free but some Soup Fest locations will charge a small fee or accept donations.
