Karl B. Van Brunt, Sr., peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior at his home in Shepherdstown on Nov. 17, 2012.

He was born in Long Branch, N.J., on April 23, 1935 and grew up in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. He was the son of Bradley Albert Van Brunt and Marjorie Beers Van Brunt.

He was predeceased by his sister, Gretchen Van Brunt Green.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Harris Van Brunt; sons K. Bradley Van Brunt, Jr. and wife, Deborah. from Newark Valley, N.Y, Douglas E. Van Brunt and wife, Elizabeth, from Frederick, Md. and Eric J. Van Brunt and wife, Margaret, from Gaithersburg, Md.; grandsons Chad N. Van Brunt and wife, Melina, Christian E. Van Brunt and wife, Victoria, Alexander D. Van Brunt, McCartney H. Van Brunt, Jacob B. Van Brunt and Nathan A. Van Brunt.

He graduated from Atlantic Highlands High School and received his BS from Trenton State College (now College of N.J.). His career began as an Industrial Arts teacher in Edison, N.J., then continued as a Cost Engineer with IBM Federal Systems Divisions in Owego, N.Y., where he advanced to Senior Functional Manager of Procurement and retired from a Division Quality Staff position at IBM FSD headquarters in Bethesda, Md. He was then employed by Xerox in Tysons Corner, Va., where he set up their procurement organization.

He had a gift for encouraging and developing people, ever the teacher, even in business. Following retirement he and Joan moved to Shepherdstown, where they have lived for 19 years.

For several years he enjoyed doing finish carpentry work on many houses in the area. He was a people person who enjoyed and valued his family and friends, loved traveling places and camping in Canada. Working in his shop helping people with their projects gave him much satisfaction.

He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and served in many capacities.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 220 S. Queen St., Martinsburg. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
