Martin Luther King Freedom Trail set
All who wish to participate in the Martin Luther King Freedom Trail are asked to assemble in front of the Old Charles Town Library at 2:45 p.m. The march will progress down Washington Street to Lawrence Street and on to the Betty Roper Auditorium at Wright Denny School on Congress Street. Churches, organizations, clubs, schools and citizens are invited to march behind their own banners and signs.
At Wright Denny, a welcome will be extended by Charles Town Mayor Peggy Smith as well as by Jefferson County NAACP President, George Rutherford. The program will celebrate the life and vision of Martin Luther King with inscriptions from the Memorial read by children and teens. Wright Denny’s chorus and other participants will lead musical selections. The year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the “I Have A Dream” speech. It also marks the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the second inauguration of our first African American president.
