Obituary-Grantham
James A. Grantham Sr., 89, of Middleway, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Canterbury Center, Shepherdstown.
He was born July 26, 1923 in Charles Town. He was the son of J. Amon Grantham and Frances White Grantham.
Mr. Grantham owned and operated Tudor Hall Farm from 1944 to 1989. Tudor Hall has been a family farm for 250 years.
He was a Lifelong Member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden, Recorder, Vestry Member, Trustee and White Church Committee Member.
He graduated from Charles Town High School, class of 1941 and attended Greenbrier Military Academy.
He was Past Master of Triluminar Lodge #117 A.F. & A.M., Middleway, where he served more than 50 years as Treasurer. He was Past High Priest of Bethesda Chapter #16 R.A.M., Middleway, and District Deputy Grand Master. Mr. Grantham has been a Master Mason for 68 years.
In addition, Mr. Grantham was a longtime Trustee of the Middleway Masonic Cemetery, Charter Member Middleway Conservancy, Lifelong Member Jefferson County Farm Bureau, Member Jefferson County Historical Society, 50-year Member Maryland/Virginia Milk Producers Association, Member American Jersey Cattle Association, Jefferson County 4-H Family of the Year, Charter President of Charles Town High School FFA Chapter, former Boy Scout, Charter Member of Farmland Preservation of Jefferson County and he enjoyed blacksmithing and showing his draft horses at the fair.
He is survived by his second wife of 22 years, Lillian E. (Unneberg) Grantham, at home; sons, William G. Grantham and wife Phyllis, Middleway, Amon Grantham and wife Peggy, Middleway, step-daughter, Lillian Prillaman and husband Grant, Shepherdstown; grandchildren, Natalie Friend and husband Randy, James Grantham and wife Amanda, John Grantham and wife Shauna, Olivia Grantham and fiance Charles, Joe Grantham and Page Moore and husband Charlie; step-grandchildren, Ana Prillaman, Lars Prillaman and Emma Prillaman; great-grandchildren, Nell, Lewis, Sam, Bryn and Grace.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Fleu Grantham, who died in 1988 and brother, William White Grantham.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Grace Episcopal Church, Middleway, with the Rev. Susan MacDonald, the Rev. John Alfriend and the Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer officiating.
Interment will be in Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites.
