Martin Luther King celebration, Jan. 13
The annual Martin Luther King Freedom March will take place on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
This year commemorates three important events: the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the 50th anniversary of the “I Have A Dream” speech and the re-election of the first African American President. Local children and teens will read from the inscriptions engraved on the sculpture of Dr. King in Washington D.C. Wright Denny’s school chorus will sing. Churches and organizations will march from the Old Charles Town Library beginning at 2:30 p.m., past the historic Court House to commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation and on to the Betty Roper Auditorium at Wright Denny School for a spirited program. Mayor Peggy Smith will welcome everyone as will George Rutherford, NAACP president, Jefferson County. The program will be followed by refreshments.
