The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will offer a special children’s program about waterfowl on Saturday, Feb. 9. The event will be for children ages 6-9. Entitled “Duck, Duck, Geese?,” it will help youngsters learn about the ducks, geese and other waterfowl that can be found in our area at this time of year.

The event will be held in the vicinity of the Shenandoah River boat launch site of the Shannnondale Springs Wildlife Management Area, off Mission Road in Jefferson County. It will last from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a $5 fee for each child.

Enrollment will be strictly limited to ensure that all children receive personal attention, and pre-registration is required.

This event is part of a new Audubon program, called “Outdoor Explore!,” that is intended to give youngsters a better understanding and appreciation of the natural world in a safe, supervised way. Its activities include hiking, exploration of different local habitats, plant and animal identification and other natural science activities.

Jan Hummer, an experienced natural science educator, is leading each program session.
