New semester for lifelong learners

This semester offers some new courses for lifelong learners. A few of the courses include Beginning Italian, an introduction to the Italian language; Celtic Spirituality meets two weeks and examines Celtic spirituality from an historical perspective as an indigenous adaptation to Christianity.

Chemistry of Nutrition Facts will focus on the gobbly gook wording on the side of food packaging. The terminology will be explained in simple terms that everyone can understand. Think Alton Brown on the Food Network explaining the breakdown of molecules in cooking

Understanding Early American Architecture will focus on local houses to learn how to identify, categorize and date historic buildings. Walking tours through Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry are planned.

The Jazz Age: Hemingway and the Fitzgeralds explores two of the most significant writers in the Age of Jazz. The relationship of these two writers will be featured this summer in a Contemporary American Theater Festival commissioned play. There will be an opportunity to talk with the playwright during this course and a jazz concert featuring music of the 20s and 30s by faculty members of the Shepherd Department of Music will be performed free on Wednesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. in the Walker Horton Shipley Recital Hall in the Frank Center.

History of Jefferson County will focus on how the county served as a cradle of American values in the 18th century and the advances that changed it in the 19th century. Learn how the Washington family was instrumental in defining its long-term destiny. Tour Antietam Battlefield and Shepherdstown Cemetery.

Facebook for Beginners is a two week course that will help participants set up a Facebook account, find friends, send messages and upload or download images. Grandchildren will be amazed to receive a friend request!

Magic of Microsoft Word is a hands-on course in the computer lab to address specific tasks that participants wish to accomplish.
