HLC to address lead paint on old buildings:

By Staff | Mar 22, 2013

In this area there are many old buildings to be maintained, protected and preserved. These buildings have lead paint on them. When property owners and their contractors go to renovate, repair or paint these old buildings, they often come face-to-face with a seeming maze of regulations regarding the hazards of lead paint.

With the expert assistance of the WVU Extension Service, the Shepherdstown Historic Landmarks Commission invites interested members of the public and construction professionals to an information session about regulations concerning lead paint on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. at Shepherdstown Town Hall.

Dan Whiteman, assistant professor at WVU, industrial hygienist and EPA authorized instructor will present the session. He will explain the following rules and discuss their application: HUD Lead Abatement Rule; EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule (RRP); and OSHA’s Lead in Construction Rule.

Whiteman will aim his presentation to the general public despite the technical nature of the subject. The Historic Landmarks Commission has requested that he also address possible conflicts between lead paint hazard reduction and preservation of historic buildings.
