Four Seasons opens new room
Shepherdstown’s neighborhood bookstore, Four Seasons Books, has a few new bells and whistles.
The local independent bookstore has transformed its children’s section by relocating it to the ground level of the two story shop on German Street.
Manager Kendra Adkins said the new location offers increased safely for children, better accessibility and greater convenience for parents.
“Parents are more comfortable letting the children read a book while they step away to browse,” she said.
The larger section now occupies two rooms and includes well-known titles for schooled-aged kids, young adults, toddlers, and even books on parenting.
Adorned with bright colored flags and lights, the new section will soon feature artwork produced by local kids who participate in regular art classes taught by Emily Vaughn of Miss Emily’s Art.
During one of her classes Wednesday, Vaughn showed off the new space that her Fine Art Studio class will transform into a mural.
Vaughn said she’s happy to use the new space with her students, praising its optimal location near the store’s restroom and outdoor garden.
“I think it’s a better location for the kids,” she said.
Adkins said that in addition to a “cozier,” children’s section, Four Seasons also plans to offer more new child-centered merchandise.
Following the recent closing of 12 Kangaroo Toy store, Adkins said the staff at Fours Seasons decided to begin selling many of its signature toys and games.
“Losing the toy store is a great blow to the community,” she said.
Adkins said the bookstore hopes to help fill the need for “quality educational” games and children’s toys.
With the relocation of the children’s section, the used and sale book sections have been moved onto the vacated second floor Adkins said.
The space upstairs will now also be used as the venue for community events.
“Now we have a larger, more accommodating space for book readings, events and groups meetings,” she said.
A special open house weekend will be held to celebrate the stores new look on April 13 and 14. The weekend will be marked by special discounts for shoppers, as well as a reception and book signing event. For more information about Four Seasons Books visit its web page at www.fourseasonsbooks.com.
