Obituary Kave
Albert F. Kave, 98, died at home May 6, 2013. He was born in Kearneysville, on May 31, 1914, and was the son of the late George W. and Bessie Whittington Kave.
Educated in Jefferson County one-room elementary schools, he worked on local farms and orchards as a youngster.
Albert graduated from the new Shepherdstown High School in 1932 and attended Shepherd College for a year while working for the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P). He accepted a management position with A&P and over the next 11 years worked in Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry and then served as manager of stores in Martinsburg and Charles Town, Hagerstown, Md. and Middletown, Va. He bought a grocery store at the corner of King Street and German Street in Shepherdstown, from the Moler family in 1947 and owned it for 30 years. He served under three different mayors on the Shepherdstown Town Council for 12 years and was the last surviving founding member of the Shepherdstown Men’s Club, which he helped to organize in 1945. Albert was recently elected to his 56th consecutive year as a director of Jefferson Security Bank. He was a lifelong member of the New Street United Methodist Church and Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Ann Lucas and husband, Dave, of New Market, Md.; one son, Albert F. Kave Jr. and wife, Carol, of Greensburg, Pa.; two grandchildren, Debbi L. Murray and husband, Stephen, of Seattle, Wash., and Krista K. Johnston and husband, Norval, of Fisherville, Va.; two great- grandchildren, Nathan A. Johnston and Kendra K. Johnston, of Fisherville, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Reva Ruth Souder Kave, in 2005; three sisters, Mary Griffith, Annabell Moore and Bertie Gardner; and three brothers, Robert, Franklin and Oscar Kave.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 10, at New Street United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dee-Ann Dixon officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Shepherdstown.
