League hosts convention
Delegates from across West Virginia assembled in Charles Town on Saturday, May fourth for the statewide convention of The League of Women Voters of West Virginia. County Commissioner and longtime Jefferson County League member Lyn Widmyer, welcomed the delegates with a power point presentation on League events in Jefferson County over the years.
Delegates presented activity reports from all the local leagues, and updates on League positions on West Virginia’s election laws, the state political processes, and natural resources.The State Board reported on the budget, the website and membership growth.The Education chair reported on new legislation affecting the school system based on problems identified in a recent statewide audit.
National League’s delegate presented information on the Membership Leadership Development (MLD) Program, and the Education Grants Program. She recognized the state MLD coaches.
The State Board approved a new study on West Virginia library funding which will be spearheaded by newly elected Jefferson County State Delegate Carolyn Watson.
State Board officers were elected and the budget and a small change in the bylaws were approved.
Sean O’Leary, playwright, columnist and blogger (the-state-of-my-state.com), was the featured speaker. He inspired the group to continue to keep a skeptical eye on the press, politicians and the process of government in West Virginia.
