“Wine and Moore,” a fundraiser with a new twist, to benefit Hospice of the Panhandle, will be held at 6 p.m. on May 31 at the Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown.

In its sixth year, the fundraiser has featured wines paired with food. It’s had different themes, including an Argentinean Barbecue and an All-American Barbecue. Usually, auction items also were featured.

Mary Alice Bowers, a watercolor artist from Martinsburg who is a member of Hospice’s fundraising committee and former board member, suggested the idea of offering artwork for the auction portion of the event. Bowers received about 20 pieces of artwork in 2012 from the estate of H. Margaret Moore, a Washington County, Md. retired teacher who died in October 2012.

“Margaret was a good friend, and a wonderful mentor,” Bowers said. “She was such a neat lady I’m honored to have gotten these pieces, and very excited to share them with the community. I know Margaret would love that we are auctioning them for charity.”

Moore, an award-winning artist who spent 25 years teaching music and art in Washington County, Md. Schools, pioneered the Suzuki Method of teaching instrumental music, having learned about it in her travels to Japan. Moore was listed in the 1974 edition of Outstanding Teachers of America. During her art career, she was president of the Valley Art Association, and was instrumental in acquiring and restoring the Mansion House Art Gallery in Hagerstown, which is home to the art association.

Art auction proceeds will go toward Hospice’s “Building the Dream” project, the construction of a 14-bed inpatient unit and office on the Berkeley-Jefferson county line. Construction, which is currently under way, should be complete in late 2013. Proceeds from Wine and Moore’s general ticket sales will go toward general operations at Hospice of the Panhandle.

Hospice of the Panhandle this month will celebrate 33 years of providing compassionate care to patients and their families at the end of life’s journey.

Tickets for “Wine and Moore” are $65 each or $125 per couple. Each ticket includes a sample of more than 15 wines paired with a buffet of gourmet fare prepared by their Executive Chef Wolfgang Vomend.
