Shepherd University’s Department of Music to hold summer music camps

The Shepherd University Department of Music will host a Summer Jazz Camp and a String Orchestra Camp to allow students to study with some of the region’s top jazz performers and string players. Registration is now open; the application deadline is June 7.

The String Orchestra Camp will take place from June 17 to 21 at the Frank Center from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to students currently enrolled in grades 9-12, as well as those who will have completed the eighth grade this year. The camp will include string orchestra rehearsals, master classes and group coaching for all students, chamber music coaching, and faculty performances. A string orchestra concert performance will take place on Friday, June 21 at 5 p.m. String instructors for the camp will include Shepherd faculty members Dr. Scott Hippensteel, conductor; Heather Austin-Stone, violin/viola; Stephen Czarkowski, cello/bass; and guest faculty member Teresa Gordon, violin/viola.

The Jazz Camps are scheduled for June 24 to 28 at the Frank Center. The Senior Jazz Camp will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to students currently enrolled in grades 9-12, as well as those who will have completed the eighth grade this year. The week will include jazz band rehearsals, individual and group coaching for all students, combo/improvisation classes, theory classes, master classes, and faculty performances. Senior Jazz Camp members will participate in a concert that will take place on Friday, June 28 at 2 p.m. Jazz Camp instructors will include Shepherd faculty members Dr. Kurtis Adams, Dr. Mark Cook, Dave Marsh, and Ronnie Shaw, as well as guest faculty member Mike Kamuf. The tuition for the String Orchestra Camp and the Senior Jazz Camp is $250 each, which includes lunch daily at the Shepherd Dining Hall.

The Junior Jazz Camp will be from June 24 to 28 at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp will include jazz band rehearsals, individual and group coaching, master classes, and faculty performances. Junior Jazz Camp members will participate in a concert on Friday, June 28 at 1 p.m. The camp is open to students currently enrolled in grades 6-8. The tuition fee is $125, and lunch is not included.
