Fresh Feast on the Farm dinner set for June 29
A summer “Fresh Feast on the Farm” dinner will be held the evening of June 29 at Mildred and Forrest Hammond’s Southwood Springs Farm near Kearneysville.
The Fresh Feast on the Farm program was launched by Jane Tabb of Leetown in 2008 with the help of funds from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.
The program is designed to help promote the connection of land to food to people and agritourism in Jefferson County. It provides unique dinner experiences that highlight delicious, locally produced foods served in beautiful farm settings.
Each dinner features a multi-course meal that varies with the seasons. The dinners are country elegant-held in a tent, barn or other farm building with white tablecloths and linen napkins.
Meals are served plated and are accompanied by West Virginia wines. The main entre for this event will be Beef Burgundy, featuring antibiotic and hormone free beef raised in Jefferson County.
Ten percent of each event’s gross revenues are donated to a partnering local non-profit organization that provides volunteer wait staff. The host farm also receives 10 percent. The remaining proceeds cover event and program costs.
The June 29 event will start at 6 p.m. with appetizers and a short walking tour of the farm. Dinner will follow at 7 p.m. A tent on the lawn near the spring and pond provide a unique setting for the event.
The partnering nonprofit organization for this event will be the Jefferson and Washington high schools’ FFA Alumni Associations. These associations are dedicated to supporting FFA activities and youth agriculture in Jefferson County. Ten percent of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Associations.
Southwood Springs forms the headwaters of Rocky Marsh. The land is protected through a Wetlands and a Farmland Protection easement. Early travelers (George Washington) watered their horses and stock at the Springs while they dined at the nearby tavern.
Dinner ticket costs are: Table for 8 – $560; Couples – $150 and Single – $80. Space is limited and reservations are required.
