Martineu’a art to show at Blue Moon

By Staff | Jun 7, 2013

After procrastinating for decades, local artist Neil Martineau has decided that his latest paintings will show at the Blue Moon Cafe. Currently already on display, the more than 40 paintings will remain there through June.

Labeled, “Old Fart Art,” Martineau, 78, shared that prints will be available of the works for $50 each; however, the original pieces are not for sale.

Martineau has painted and drawn since childhood, receiving his first formal training at Princeton with Prix-de-Rome winner Steven Greene. His student work was exhibited at the Princeton Art Museum and the Young Men’s Hebrew Association in Manhattan in 1958.

Greene advised Martineau not to try to make a living as a painter because “painters are too poor to afford houses and station wagons.” Martineau shares that in the meantime, his fellow student, Frank Stella, became rich enough to own several houses and Ferraris.

The current exhibit features paintings done in Shepherdstown over the past year, Martineau said, after lessons with Rebecca Jones and sessions with a Critique Group of Painters. Included in the group are Jones, Judy Bradshaw, Stan Jones and Toby Pierce.

“Without these ‘Critters,’ Martineau’s lates work could not have been conceived, or born,” he said.

“Seen altogether, they are quite impressive,” Martineau said of his work.
