Sunshine and bluegrass make festival shine
“We could not have asked for better weather,” said Heather McIntyre, director of the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce. The chamber hosted the annual Mountain Heritage Arts and Crafts Festival this past weekend. “It was a good show,” McIntyre continued.
The festival welcomed nearly 50 new vendors this year offering a variety of craftsmanship in a variety of mediums including jewelry, glasswork, rugs, stonework, photography and much more. The crafters are juried artisans and craftspersons who come from locations all across the country..
Wineries from around West Virginia also participated once again, offering samples of their beverages which could then be purchased for off-site consumption.
“We had two new wineries join us this year,” McIntyre said. The winery tents are always a popular draw for visitors who come from around the region to see what the festival has to offer.
Also a large draw is the entertainment offered on the stage. Patent Pending, The Hillbilly Gypsies, Bill Emerson & The Sweet Dixie Band and Nothin’ Fancy were among the bluegrass bands that had audience members tapping their feet.
Profits from the two festivals held each year go back into the community, McIntyre said, in the form of donations made by the Chamber. Specific organizations who receive vary each year; however, some remain constant. The Jefferson County 4-H Leaders Association, the Boy Scouts, fire and rescue companies around the county and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Reserves are all annual recipients. Each of these entities provide support throughout the festivals from security to ticket takers.
“The festival could not run as smoothly as it does without all of the volunteer help from these folks,” McIntyre said.
The fall festival is set for Sept. 27, 28 and 29. Admission costs are $7 for adults, $4 for children 6-17. Parking, arts/crafts demonstrations, wine tasting, live bluegrass music and children’s crafts are included. There is a minimal charge for the moon bounce. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.jeffersoncountywvchamber.org/festival.
