Art and photography show this weekend

By Staff | Jul 26, 2013

Susan Carney and Sarah Huntington will host a showing of their work at the War Memorial Building July 26-28 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Huntington, a photographer, who resides in Virginia, will fill half of the space in the exhibit with photographs for purchase. The remainder of the space will be filled with artwork by Carney, a resident of Shepherdstown who specializes in painting and monotype printmaking. Both mediums will be featured.

Carney said this week that she enjoys doing what is becoming an annual show during the Contemporary American Theater Festival that draws a large crowd to the area.

“I have a contemporary edge to my work,” she explained, which lends itself to utilizing the timing of the Festival.

Carney shared that she has been involved in monotype printmaking since attending Shepherd University beginning in 1995. She obtained her undergraduate degree there in painting and printmaking. She followed up with her Masters program in painting at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

In addition to the exhibit in Shepherdstown this weekend, Carney also has work on exhibit through Aug. 6. at Tamarack.

“That show is a juried show,” she said, which means one must be chosen to participate. Although Carney has exhibited there previously, she indicated it is difficult to do that show because the gallery is so far away for artists in the Eastern Panhandle.

Carney explained that her subject matter is, for the most part, drawn from nature, especially birds and insects.

“When working with them, I address other issues that I might be thinking about,” she said. An example she gave was a butterfly series entitied Possession, New World Order and Generations.

“These are used as a metaphor for things in the world that mean something to me,” she said.

In addition to the three day showing, there will be a reception held Saturday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. at the War Memorial Building. Both artists will offer their work for sale during the weekend.
