By Staff | Jul 26, 2013

Leona Ruth Brenwald Phares, a resident of Canterbury Center in Shepherdstown for the past 18 months, expired July 16, 2013. Prior to that, she lived in Hedgesville, with her family, Glenn and Janice Leonard, following the death of her husband.

Mrs. Phares was born in Randolph County. She was married to Ray L. Phares Sr., and they raised their family of six children on a farm in the community of Montrose, outside Elkins.

Due to illness and death within the family, they opened their home to eight other related children over the years, providing much needed stability and love. Mrs. Phares could often be heard singing, reciting poetry and scripture and telling stories of her childhood. She was a fabulous cook, a happy homemaker and she loved to entertain.

She attended the Hedgesville United Methodist Church while living in Hedgesville.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins, with the Rev. Jonas Johnson Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Elkins.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Leona Ruth Phares.
