The following free events are happening:

Calling all kids interested in reading library books and earning prizes: there is still time to pick up a reading log in the Children’s Department of the Shepherdstown Library. There are easy, age-appropriate reading quotas, and preschoolers may receive prizes for listening to library books. Monday, August 5 is the first day to return a completed reading log to receive a packet of prize coupons generously provided by local businesses. “Dig Into Reading!” this summer!

FOSL, the Friends of the Shepherdstown Library, is hosting a free family film beginning at dusk on August 9. The film will be shown, weather permitting, on the back wall of the Library at 100 East German Street. Please bring your own seating; some snacks will be available. (Donations for library programs are always welcome!) Call the Library at (304) 876-2783 to find out the titles of these films.

Intermediate Bridge players are invited to join an informal group meeting every Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Chapel. All are welcome and walk-ins are encouraged. For more information, contact 304-876-6244.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The Museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. On display are 18th and 19th century crafts, other early artifacts, and a replica, made by local craftsmen, of James Rumsey’s early steamboat. The South Jefferson Public Library is pleased to announce an art exhibit featuring the works of Stefanie Boss, photographer. This exhibition is the 45th in the Art in the Library series hosted by the library to highlight the talents of local artists. The exhibit runs from July 1 to August 31st and can be viewed during library hours: Monday through Thursday 10- 7, Saturdays 10-5, and Sundays 1-5. The library is closed Fridays. The library is located at 49 Church St, Summit Point.

Aug. 10

New Street United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown will be holding its annual Peach Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Homemade peach pie (by the slice), homemade peach ice cream, peach crisp, other desserts, sandwiches, and drinks will be offered. If available whole peach pies will be sold after 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy good food and fellowship.

The Jefferson County Council on Aging in Ranson will host a yard sale and car wash from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the center, 103 W. 5th Avenue. Proceeds will go toward the Jefferson County Conquerors of Alzheimer’s, JCCOA’s team to walk in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in September.

Aug. 13

An Ecumenical Service of Prayer and Healing hosted by Trinity Episcopal Church on the corner of German and Church Street in Shepherdstown will meet from 7-8 p.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall. Aug. 16

Movie Night on the lawn at Morgan’s Grove Park! This family fun event offering Madagascar 3 starts at dusk. Bring blankets or chairs and head out for the second annual movie night at the park sponsored by the Shepherdstown Community Club. Popcorn, candy and sodas will be available for purchase. Plan ahead for another movie night Sept. 20 when the SCC will show ’42’ in the park.

Aug. 17-24

The Jefferson County Fair begins at the Fairgrounds in Leetown. All exhibits are due at the fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 17. Pick up a fair book or schedule at all local banks.

Aug. 18

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a geocaching workshop at its Yankauer Nature Preserve in Berkeley County beginning at 4 p.m. It will focus on the basics of geocaching, including the use of the GPS (Global Positioning System).Participants may use their own GPS units or smartphones. GPS units will be available for those who need one. The event will be free and open to the public but space will be limited and pre-registration is essential. Aug. 24

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Shepherdstown Community Club (SCC) will host a Shepherdstown University new, incoming student open-house and reception at the WMB in town. The event is to welcome new freshman students to the community and is a chance for Club members and the community to meet and greet these young people and talk-up the town and all it has to offer. Included is a public Art Show of SU students work and light refreshments will be served. The event will be in the Gallery on the lower level. Save the date and come welcome the new students to town.

Aug. 25

All descendants of John Jacob Link and their families and friends are invited to attend the 61st Link Family Reunion on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church Parish Hall, Uvilla.

The church is located on Route 230, 4.5 miles south of Shepherdstown. Please bring a dish for the potluck luncheon. Beverages and utensils will be provided.

Sept. 2

The Shepherdstown Community Club will host the annual Labor Day picnic at Morgan’s Grove Park. Watch for more details as the date gets closer.

Sept. 14

Beth Moore Simulcast at Charles Town Baptist Church at 9 a.m. Cost is $20 and registration forms are available at the church office or text 703-887-3178 for more information.

The Jefferson County Council on Aging will host their 2nd Annual Motorcycle Ride at the Anna Mae Reedy Senior Center. Pre-Registration preferred to guarantee t-shirt. Cost for driver $25 (includes lunch and t-shirt); Rider $15 (includes lunch). If you register at the door, the cost for driver will be $30 and t-shirts are subject to availability. Registration is 8:30-10:30 a.m. with a two hour ride to begin at 10:30 a.m. BBQ lunch will be served after ride. Motorcycle ride benefits Jefferson County Council on Aging: Anna Mae Reedy Senior Center and JCCOA Jefferson Center. Registration is due by Aug. 9.
