Historic Shepherdstown honors local preservation efforts
On Sept. 4, at Historic Shepherdstown’s annual Membership Meeting, President Vicki Smith and Preservation Award Committee member John Griffith presented the 2013 Preservation Awards to Grant and Sarah Moerschel, to the members of the Elmwood Cemetery Association and to Elmwood President Dickie Brown. The Moerschels’ award was for their exemplary preservation of their arts and crafts style home at 106 Duke Street. The Elmwood Cemetery Association Award was for the Association’s many projects over a period of years to restore headstones at the cemetery, improve the appearance, and provide information about the significant Shepherdstown history found there. Historic Shepherdstown presented an individual award to President Dickie Brown for his personal commitment to the Cemetery’s preservation.
Historic Shepherdstown presents the Awards to property owners within the Shepherdstown Magisterial District who have restored or renovated an historic structure or site in an historically appropriate manner. These awards are given to encourage continuing preservation efforts to help maintain Shepherdstown’s historic character.
