Pink Ribbons lined German street and Rumsey bridge this week as part of a local effort to bring awareness to Breast Cancer.

As October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the local non-profit Breast Cancer Awareness- Cumberland Valley (BCACV), spent early Monday morning tying pink ribbons and bows on all of the parking meters downtown.

The “Park in the Pink” project is an annual event for the local group.

According to Executive Director, Joan Fell, the event is held throughout the tri-state region, as the organization provides assistant to residents of Washington and Frederick Counties in Maryland, Franklin and Fulton Counties in Pennsylvania, Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties, here in the Eastern Panhandle and Winchester, Virginia areas.

As a part of their mission Monday, the small team, organized by local coordinator Betty Snyder, also created a “field of pink,” in Martinsburg in front of Martin’s Grocery Store.

Fell said that statistically one out of every eight women in Berkeley County will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime, according to the latest census information.

Fell said the purpose of events like “Park in the Pink,” is to promote awareness of early detection options for these possible victims.

BCACV provides a free two-part program, which includes access to free mammograms and ultra sounds, as well after diagnosis support.

“We have the most comprehensive after diagnosis support program in the nation,” Fell said.

This support includes programs like “clean sweep,” –which provides cleaning services to those undergoing chemotherapy, or “dinner’s ready,” a program that provides chemo patients with gift cards for meals.

The non profit also hosts the local area’s only “wig bank,” which is open to all cancer patients.

In order to provide its services for free, the non profit raises funding each year through several events.

“We do all our fundraising for our programs,” Fell said.

The organizations largest fundraiser, “Step’n Stride,” a walk against Breast Cancer, will be held this Saturday, Oct.19 in Hagerstown.
