Daycare Celebrates Thanksgiving

By Staff | Nov 29, 2013

The Shepherdstown Day Care Center began celebrating the holidays early when it held its annual Thanksgiving lunch last week.

Children and members of the community, as well as Day Care staff all participated in the lunch comprised of traditional holiday favorites like mashed potatoes, ham and of course, turkey.

The Shepherdstown Day Care takes children from 3 months old to ten years of age. And currently serves children from Jefferson, Berkeley and Washington counties.

Shepherdstown Day Care Director Melissa Helman said the day care holds its Thanksgiving lunch every year in addition to holiday themed crafts and projects.

“Today is so special to us. We all pull together as a team,” she said of the lunch.

The day care, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has many events in the works according to the Board of Director President Patty Martineau.

“All of the things we’re doing are in celebration of the 40th,” she said.

A special “Day out for Day Care,” raffle is set to begin, and will feature a basket full of gift certificates for local restaurants to benefit the day care.

The annual Christmas gift re-wrap will be held again to provide needy families with toys for Christmas.

In addition, the day care staff will be selling hot cider and cocoa in front of the Shepherdstown Library every Saturday during Christmas in Shepherdstown and will march with the children in Shepherdstown’s Christmas Parade.

“We”re excited to be a part of the parade,” Helman said.

“It’s going to be cool.”

Martineau said she was glad to celebrate Thanksgiving with the kids once again.

“It was wonderful to have all over the children eating together,” she said.

The Shepherdstown Day Care Centers annual fund drive will begin Dec. 2. Donations for the day care can be sent by mail to PO Box 388, Shepherdstown, W.Va. For more information about the day care visit its website at shepherdstowndaycare.org.
