Shepherd University’s International Politics of Human Rights class will be hosting a “Human Rights Week.” The focus of the week will be on the human rights violations occurring in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Monday Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. a Human Rights Violations in the DRC Teach-in will be held.

Join us in the Byrd Center For Legislative Studies Multi-Purpose room (in the basement of the BCLS) for a teach-in on the human rights violations occurring in the DRC. The topics include: Child Soldiers, Health Violations, Sexual Violence and Rape, Displacement, and Summary Executions. In addition there will be a presentation by members of the Enough Project on current actions being taken to stop the human rights violations occurring in the DRC. Light refreshments will be provided by Shepherd’s Dinning Services.

On Tuesday Dec. 3 at 7 p.m Documentary will be shown.

The BBC one hour long documentary Kids with Guns will be shown at the Shepherdstown Opera House. In the documentary Stacey Dooley investigates the use of child soldiers in the Congolese Civil War which is the bloodiest conflict continuing to occur today. Dooley also explores the programs in which former child soldiers are reintegrated into society. The documentary showing is free.

On Wednesday Dec. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. an Information Table with be held at the Four Corners.

Join the students of the International Politics of Human Rights class at the four corners by Knutti Hall as they hand out information on the human rights violations occurring in the DRC. Information will include not only what violations are occurring, but what actions are being taken to prevent them as well.

In addition to these events, a replica refugee tent will be put up on East Campus to give students a better understanding of how displaced peoples in the Democratic Republic of Congo live and bring awareness to the events.
