Sturm announces run for BOE

Shepherdstown resident Alan Sturm has announced that he plans to run for a seat on the Jefferson County Board of Education in the May 13, 2014, primary election. Three Board seats will be open for that election.
Sturm is a retired educator who spent 36 years working in public schools in Maryland and West Virginia. He retired as assistant superintendent of Upshur County Schools.
He stated that this is a critical time for the Board. They are facing a number of difficult issues including continued student growth and shrinking revenue. He feels that he has the experience and qualifications to make a positive contribution in finding solutions to the problems.
Sturm stated that a number of individuals both from within the school system and from the community at large have approached him about the possibility of running again. Sturm served two terms on the Jefferson County Board being elected in 2004 and 2008. He chose not to seek another term in 2012 because of family commitments. According to Sturm, the family issues have been resolved and he now has the time necessary for the job.
