The newest kit is our “Nature in Winter Explorer Pack,” with eight paperbacks plus an activity book compiled by Suzanne Taylor of PVAS, the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, with funds from the Nora Roberts Foundation. With glow-in-the-dark winter constellations, instructions for identifying animal tracks, and ideas for feeding wild birds, there are plenty of reasons to be outdoors in winter. Other PVAS packs include one on “Backyard Habitats” (with pocket guides to urban wildlife, West Virginia birds, and more); a “Reptiles and Amphibians” backpack with field guides as well as songs, puzzles, and craft ideas; and an “Insect Explorer Pack” with magnifying viewers, a net, a scavenger hunt bandana and lots more. Two plastic totes are also available: the “Bird Explorer Teachers Kit” has an electronic birdsongs identifier, twelve binoculars, three posters, and lots more supplies for a class. The “Insect Explorer Teachers Kit” includes a card game and a clip art CD, and lets students view the world through ‘bug eyes.’ For anyone interested in geocaching and letterboxing, we offer an “Explore WV Library Geo-kit,” which includes a GPS device.
