Jazzin’ it up
Shepherdssown Middle School jazz band students once again received a superior rating at the 28th annual Hedgesville High School Jazz Festival Saturday. The school’s band also saw four of its members named to the Middle School All-Star Band. Selected were Kate Cauvel on bari saxophone; Noah Wirt on trombone; Daisy Levine on piano and Ryan King on guitar. In addition the band’s trumpet section was selected as the outstanding section of the day.
Also competing were the three other middle schools in Jefferson County who each received superior ratings as well. Harpers Ferry Middle was chosen to have the best saxophone section. All Star selections included Samantha Milbourne and Damien Wilmer, both on alto saxophone; Jared Myers, trumpet; Matt Holmes, bass and Lilly Simmons, flute. Charles Town Middle had the best trombone section. Their All Star members included Jackson Stewart on tenor sax, Isaac Villa on trmpet and Matthew Wogan on trombone. Wildwood Middle’s rhythm section took top honor and Olivia Stevenson was selected on trumpet and Andrew Kelvington on trombone along with Niko Petretta on drums for the All Star band.
Also performing were Hedgesville Middle, Musselman Middle and South Martinsburg Middle.
The bands will compete again Saturday, Mar. 1 at the Eastern Regional Jazz Festival at Jefferson High School.
The Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band was judged as the best middle school jazz band in the state of West Virginia for 2012 and 2013. Following the Regional festival Saturday, the band will know if they will once again compete for the state honor.
