Shepherd to host percussion day and drum competition

The Shepherd University Department of Music will host the West Virginia Percussive Arts Society 2014 Spring Day of Percussion Saturday, Mar. 29 in the Frank Center. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The first event, a snare drum competition, starts at 10 a.m. with high school and collegiate divisions.

Orlando Cotto is the featured guest for a clinic and performance on the marimba and other Latin percussion instruments.

Other event activities include a hand-drumming fundamentals session with Mike Vercelli, a snare drum clinic with J. Mark Reilly, and a marimba and Latin percussion session with Cotto and Jim Hannah, a timbalero in Rumba Club. The day will conclude with a concert featuring the top-placing snare-drum competition participants and performances by percussion ensembles from Shepherd, West Liberty University, West Virginia University, and Concord University, and Cotto at 3:30 p.m.

Registration is $10 for non-Percussive Arts Society members and free for current members. The PAS is offering a special promotion for the $10 registration fee to include a trial membership for an entire year. To obtain membership prior to the event, go to www.pas.org.
