The Charles Washington Symphony Community Orchestra plans to put on a special celebration show for Mother’s Day this weekend.

Shepherdstown resident Brian Ellsworth, who help found the orchestra with Andrea Diggs and musical director Camilo Perez- Mejia, said the performance will close the group’s second season.

Ellsworth formed the group in Nov. 2012 he saw a need for a venue for string instruments.

“Our idea was to start an orchestra drawing from musicians in the area,” he said.

He said a part of the group’s mission is to serve as a example to youth players and aspiring professionals.

“There’s no exposure around here for kids,” he said.

High school students are often invited to sit in on rehearsals and shadow professional orchestral musicians throughout the season.

:It’s the best way for them to get to see the instruments live and in action,” he said.

Ellsworth said each show also lends itself to younger audiences as the programs generally blend traditional orchestral music with contemporary pieces.

Sundays performance called “A Spring Celebration,” will feature: “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” by Handel, Schubert’s “Who is Silvia?” accompanied by woodwind quartet from the orchestra, and featuring a solo vocal performance by Alyssa Dowell, Beethoven’s Symphony #1, the Adagio molto-Allegro and a “traditional favorite,” by banjo player, Dave Asti.

The 25 member orchestra is made up of players from Winchester, Va., Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.

Ellsworth said the group continues to accept news musicians.

Both amateur and professional players will perform in Sunday’s show.

The performance begins at 2 p.m. at Washington High School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 at the door. Those 17 years of age and younger will be admitted for free.
