On May 31, the Panhandle Pedalers Cycling will be hosting a Poker Run to raise funds for Meal on Wheels of Jefferson County at the Black Dog Coffee Shop in Bardane.

The event will feature routes along the Route 9 Multipurpose Recreation Trail and the roads of Jefferson County through Bardane, Leetown, Shepherdstown and more. The event is intended to raise funds for Meals on Wheels and also be a fun way to get residents and riders active.

What is a bicycle poker run? Cyclists ride on a predetermined route throughout Jefferson County, drawing a playing card at each station. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the ride. A portion of each participant’s $20 registration fee goes into a pot. Prizes will be awarded to the top three poker hands.

Day of registration will start at 8:30 a.m., with a rolling start for riders between 9 and 9:30 a.m. Card stations will close around 1:30 p.m., and all score cards must be returned by 2 p.m. Route options as short as nine miles, offering opportunities for even the novice rider.

The Panhandle Pedalers are a group of cycling enthusiasts based in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia and surrounding areas. The goal of the club is to promote and encourage bicycling in our community for all levels of cyclists. From “weekly rides” to scheduled events to event support, it is involved in a wide range of cycling activities.

Meals on Wheels of Jefferson County board members and other volunteers will be on hand at the event to help hand out water to the cyclists, and pass out MOW-JC information to the community.
