“Fizz, Boom, Read!” is the theme for the Shepherdstown Library’s Summer Program, and families are invited to register for these six free children’s programs starting on June 9:

“Majesties of the Pond” is offered for all ages on Saturday, June 21 at 11:30 a.m. (location to be decided). Dragonflies, damsel flies, skimmers and other water bugs will be featured, and there will be a butterfly/dragonfly tee shirt craft (bring your own, or buy a tee shirt for $4.00).

“Rockets and Robots” will be held at the Shepherdstown Train Station on Tuesday, June 24. From 5 to 6 p.m., there will be a rocket-building program for children 4 and older, demonstrating propulsion using everything from air to soda bubbles. At 6 p.m. children 8 and older may stay for the robotics program. Using household materials and simple electric currents, we will create a variety of robots such as a hoverbot and robo-bug!

Wildlife Ambassadors will present “Creepy Crawlies” for all ages on Tuesday, July 1 at 11:30 a.m. (location to be decided). Discover poisonous and venomous creatures as well as those awake at night.

Meet Flower Lorenzo, the “Fossil Lady,” on Tuesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. (location to be decided). All ages will get to look at and touch the different types of fossils in her amazing collection, and she will share about how she finds fossils, and how to tell if a rock might be a fossil.

“Turning Around America” will be set up behind the Shepherdstown Library (100 East German Street) from Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Each mobile workshop will provide guidance and materials for photography, printmaking, lathe turning and more. Adults and children 7 and older are welcome.

“Fizz, Slurp, Splat!” will be a variety of gross science experiments at the Shepherdstown Train Station on Thursday, July 24 at 5 p.m. Ages 4 and older are invited to make creations such as fake snot, a belching balloon, and slimy DNA strands, while learning the chemistry behind these amazing experiments.

Registration for our free summer reading program will also begin on June 9. Children who read library books (or are read to) may return their completed reading logs starting Aug. 4, to receive wonderful prizes from generous local businesses. There will be a free French Immersion Story Time for infants though second graders on Monday, June 2 at 4:00 in the Library’s Children’s Department, and a Spanish Immersion Story Time on Monday, June 9, also at 4 p.m. Each session includes a story and a craft. If you have previously registered for these monthly programs, there is no need to do so again.

On June 11 the Shepherdstown Library’s Board of Trustees will hold its annual meeting to elect officers at 7 p.m. The public is, as always, welcome to attend; for details call (304) 876-2783.

The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) Book Club will be discussing Hotel du Lac on Friday, June 27 at 4 p.m. in the Library. Anita Brookner won the Booker Prize for this novel about a romance writer in Switzerland; her book has been described as “spellbindingelegant but passionate, funny.”

Adults are invited to borrow a Kindle Touch, pre-loaded with a variety of fiction, nonfiction, or mystery titles. If you prefer, the Librarian will download book titles that you select from our free database. Complete with instructions, a USB cable and a charging adapter, these Kindles may be borrowed for two weeks by permanent residents of Jefferson County. Kindle borrowers must be 18 or older, have a Shepherdstown Library card, and show a drivers license or WV photo ID.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Enjoy Monsters University (G rated) at Morgan’s Grove Park on a giant inflatable movie screen. Bring your blankets, picnic, chairs and enjoy an evening under the stars with your family. The film starts around 8 p.m. ends around 10 p.m. Admission is free. Popcorn & Other Refreshments will be available for a modest cost.

June 14

The Mid-Atlantic Psychic Fair will be held at the Clarion Hotel. It is largest psychic fair ever to come to this area! In historic Shepherdstown Alternative healers, palm readers, psychics, mediums, astrologers, booksellers and more will be on hand.

Shepherdstown Area independent Living, SAIL, will hold an Art Show at the Entler Hotel from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. This is both a fundraiser and an opportunity to further acquaint the community about SAIL and its mission Raffle tickets are being sold on Sunday mornings at the Farmer’s Market and may be purchased through the office at 304-870-7245 or on the day of the show.
