Winners announced at play festival

The 14th Annual New Voice Play Festival was held on June 20, 21 and 22 at Charles Town’s Old Opera House.

This year’s winning plays were: Golden Curtain Award: “Plumber’s Butt,” by Jay Huling Jacksonville, Florida. Directed by Karen Paone, the play featured Lee Hebb as Harvey; Amy Hebb as Carol; Katie Kennedy as Vicki; and Will Heyser as Tim.

Silver Stage Award was “Shimmer” by Tess Light of Los Alamos, New Mexico.Directed by Christine Brewer, the play featured Catherine Ellzey as Lady Mayfly; Zach Little as Gentleman Mayfly; and Charlie Perkins as a variety of Mayflies.

The Spotlight Award went to “Mama’s Almost Birthday” by Lily Rusek of New York, New York. Directed by Ed Conn, the play featured Lauren R. Hugg as Vera Barber; Sarah Celec as Isabelle Barber; Charlie Perkins as Lenny Weintraub; and Rene Farabaugh as Rochelle Fiore.

Another Spotlight Award was given to “Ethel” by Seth Freeman of Pacific Palisades, California. The play, directed by James Wright, featured Linda Romero as Ethel Hurd; Gabrielle Tokach as Ginny Hurd; Alan Harner as Sheriff Sgt. Bernie Barry; Zak Miller as Gene Hurd; Gwen Leonard as Joanie Meekin; John-Michael Rolnick as Rand Burstyn; and Shari Shrewsberry Martin as Myrna Burstyn.

Honorable Mentions went to “Decoy” by Carl L. Williams Houston, Texas; “Here’s Looking at You”

by J. C. Svec of Clark, New Jersey; “No Small Parts” by Charlie Perkins of Brunswick, Maryland; “Most Valuable Play Girl” by Jack Gilhooley of Bradenton, Florida; and “It’s Your Funeral” by Barry Weinberg of Bethesda, Maryland.

2014 New Voice judges were Christine Brewer, Ed Conn, Jennifer George, Katie Kennedy, Bruce Olson, John-Michael Rolnick and James Wright.
