Jefferson County Museum participating in assessment program

Heritage Preservation is pleased to announce the Jefferson County Museum has been chosen to participate in the 2014 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP). Jefferson County Museum joins the 2,800 museums that have participated in CAP in its twenty-two year history of serving museums. Heritage Preservation’s CAP is supported through a cooperative agreement with the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. CAP provides funds to museums for professional conservation specialists to identify the conservation needs of their collections and recommend ways to meet those needs. Heritage Preservation’s President, Lawrence L. Reger, praised Jefferson County Museum for “making the vital work of caring for collections a priority of their institution, even in these challenging financial times and helping ensure that they are available to present and future generations.”

In late May, a professional conservator spent two days at the Jefferson County Museum surveying the collection and site. Using information obtained from the site visit, he will prepare a comprehensive report that will identify conservation priorities. The assessment report will help the museum make appropriate improvements for the immediate, mid-range and long-range care of its collections.

The Jefferson County Museum, located at 200 E. Washington Street in Charles Town. The museum’s collection encompasses a wide range of artifacts reflecting the events and the lives of the people of Jefferson County from early Native American activities to the settlements of the 1700s through the 20th century. Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am – 4pm, the museum’s latest exhibit features Frank Buckles, the last U.S. World War I veteran and county resident. Upcoming new exhibits will cover the career of United States Air Force Brigadier General Wayne “Speedy” Lloyd, Jefferson County women artists, and county businesses. Established in 1965, the museum will be celebrating 50 years of service to the community next year.
