Shepherdstown Farmers Market announces fundraising event
The Shepherdstown Farmers Market Association (SFMA) features fresh farm products from local farmers and Shepherdstown vendors on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on King Street (behind the town library). The market provides Shepherdstown residents with easy access to the products of local growers and food workers. During the season, the SFMA hosts musical performances and creates special events to make the market fun for everyone.
This years fundraiser is a Farm-to-Fork Dinner. It features a menu using all ingredients from the Shepherdstown Farmers market as prepared by several local restaurants. The dinner will be held Sunday, July 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. outdoors behind the town library (If it rains, the dinner will be held in the Shepherdstown Community Club).
:This is a ‘Local’ movement and a wonderful example of the local community supporting the local farmer, and the farmer supporting the local restaurants back into the local community,” stated event organizer Inge Ledden of The Cottage of Herbs, a long time participant in the SFMA. “With this event, we are teaching the value of ‘Local’ and showing how it works through food,” she said.
The purpose of the fundraiser, besides raising consciousness about the local food economy, is to raise funds to buy books on organic gardening and sustainable farming for the children’s section of the library and to fund a gardening program at the Shepherdstown Elementary School.
The event menu and a list of participating restaurants as well as sponsors can be found at the Shepherdstown Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ShepherdstownFarmersMarket.
The main course on July 20 will be smoked pork loin with savory dry rub by The Clarion with plum chutney by The Press Room, garlic roasted potatoes (yellow, red and blue) with fresh herbs by Domestic and a fresh market vegetable medley by Mellow Moods. The full menu will include entrees made by Blue Moon, Devonshire, Bavarian Inn, Hypnocoffee, Shaharazades, Shepherdstown Sweetshop and Bristro 112.
The tickets, limited to 100, are $50 a place setting and can be purchased at the Shepherdstown farmers market on Sundays behind the library, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and at Hypno Coffee and Domestic during the week.
