The Shepherdstown Library will be closed September first to observe Labor Day.

A French Immersion Story Time (for infants through second graders) will be held on Monday, Sept. 8 from 4 to 4:45 in the Library’s Children’s Department, and a Spanish Immersion Story Time will be held on Monday, Sept. 15, also at 4 p.m. in the Library.

These free programs resume the week of September 15: “Lap Babies and Ones” will be on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. and the “Twos” will meet from 11:15 to noon on Tuesdays. The “Threes, Fours, and Fives” program will be moved to Thursdays from 11:15 to noon. Ages 5 through 12 are invited to attend the “After School Program” which will be moved to Wednesdays from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Captivating and mesmerizing are words often used to describe storyteller Susan Strauss, who will appear in a free program on Saturday, Sept. 13, location and time to be determined. The Shepherdstown Library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon for staff development.

There will be a free “technology petting zoo” from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Shepherdstown Library for community members! Have you wondered what it’s like to read a digital book, and tried to compare the features of various brands of e-readers? Megan Tarbett, Digital Resource Librarian of the WV Library Commission will answer your questions about all kinds of electronic devices. No registration is necessary; feel free to drop in.

Joseph Bundy will portray Osborne Perry Anderson on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at O’Hurley’s General Store, 205 East Washington Street in Shepherdstown. Anderson was the only surviving African-American participant of John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. Enjoy light refreshments (provided by FOSL, Friends of the Shepherdstown Library) while hearing an exciting eyewitness account from the point of view of this abolitionist.

Sept. 20 is the last day children may bring in a completed summer reading log to receive a packet of thirteen prizes donated by generous local businesses.

The FOSL Book Club will meet Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. in the Library to discuss Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. EARTHEN VESSELS: An Introduction to Shamanic Practice for Adults Ages 18 -108 will be offered on Mondays, Aug. 25-Sept. 15, from 7-8:30 p.m., at a Shepherdstown location to be announced closer to class time. Shamanism precedes all religions of the world by tens of thousands of years and teaches reverence for and connectedness with the world of nature. It is a path of direct experience. THE NATHANIEL PROGRAM: 8 Weeks of Meditation & Spiritual Awareness Training will be offered on Tuesday evenings, Sept 30-Nov 18 from 7:30-9 p.m. at a Shepherdstown location to be announced closer to class time. Participants will gradually build to 20 minutes of breathing meditation daily. The class will also explore a wide range of spiritual and religious traditions in search of new perspectives and greater awareness. All descendants of John Jacob Link and their families and friends are invited to attend the 62nd Link Family Reunion on at 1 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church parish hall, Uvilla. Please bring a covered dish to share at the Potluck luncheon.

The South Jefferson Public Library is pleased to announce an art exhibit featuring the Papercutting of Elizabeth O’Shea Goins. Elizabeth’s body of work being exhibited at South Jefferson Library. A reception will be held between 2 and 4 p.m. at the library for the public to meet and talk with this talented artist, view her beautiful and creative work and enjoy refreshments.

South Jefferson Public Library will host the last concert of the Summer Music Series the end of this month. From 3-5 p.m., featuring the music of Jennifer Maghan. We are located at the corner of Church Street and Summit Point Road in Summit Point. You are welcome to bring your lawn chairs or blankets and refreshments – no alcoholic beverages please. Sept. 1

The Shepherdstown Community Club will host its annual Labor Day Picnic from 2 to 5 p.m. at Morgan’s Grove Park. The event is for the members and friends of the SCC, as well as the public and friends of Morgan’s Grove Park. Come to the park and enjoy grilled burgers from Danny Rohrer Meats, as well as hot dogs, sodas, chips and salsa, and, if possible, bring a dish to share. Salads and desserts are welcome. There is a nominal charge for the burgers and hot dogs to help offset the cost.

The famous Rohrersville Band provides entertainment again this year. Bring some friends and share good food, meet neighbors and enjoy the beauty of the community park.

Sept. 3

The Historic Shepherdstown Speaker Series will present Dr. Keith Alexander speaking on “History from the Ground Up: What Our Cemeteries Tell Us About Shepherdstown’s Past.” The presentation, which will be preceded by the organization’s brief annual meeting, will take place at 7 p.m. at Shepherd University’s Byrd Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Sept. 6

The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is having their annual Indoor Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Zion Episcopal Church Parish House in Charles Town, located at 221 East Washington St. Come check out the large variety of items and help less fortunate cats and dogs in our area. All proceeds will benefit the homeless pets waiting for adoption at the Animal Welfare Society shelter on Leetown Pike, near the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
