Shepherdstown Cemetery Talk set for Sept. 3

By Staff | Aug 22, 2014

Shepherd University historian Dr. Keith Alexander will speak on “History from the Ground Up: What Our Cemeteries Tell Us About Shepherdstown’s Past” on Sept. 3 at the University’s Byrd Center at 7 p.m. The talk is part of Historic Shepherdstown’s Annual Speaker Series. It is free.

The Byrd Center is located on King Street on the Shepherd campus adjacent to Scarborough Library. Please note that this location is a change from earlier announcements.

Dr. Alexander has led multiple projects in Shepherdstown’s cemeteries, teaching students how to restore old gravestones and to research the town’s history through the stories of the individuals buried here. Dr. Alexander brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this subject.

Dr. Alexander’s talk will be preceded by a brief annual membership meeting of the Historic Shepherdstown Commission. The public is welcome to the meeting and the talk. Refreshments will follow the talk.

The final talk in the 2014 Speakers Series will feature Shepherdstown Historian Laureate Dr. Jim Price on “Strange As It Seems: Actual Happenings in Shepherdstown,” on Oct. 23, also at the Byrd Center.
