CLOSED Jan. 1: No fines will be charged for overdue items returned while the Shepherdstown Library is closed. We will reopen on Friday, January 2 from 10 to 4 (also a fine-free day).

Jan. 5-10: There are three ways to register for our free weekly story times for infants through age 12: call (304) 876-2783, email splchild@martin.lib.wv.us, or visit us at 100 East German St. Lap Babies and Ones will meet Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. beginning January 13. Time for Toddlers will be on Tuesdays from 11:15 to noon, also starting the 13th. The After School Program for ages 5 through 12 will be held Wednesdays from 4 to 4:45 and begins Jan. 14. Thursdays from 11:15 to noon is the Threes, Fours, and Fives program, which begins Jan. 15.

Jan. 5: A French Immersion Story Time (for infants through second graders) will be held from 4 to 4:45 in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department at 100 E. German St.

Jan. 12: A Spanish Immersion Story Time (for infants through second graders) will be held from 4 to 4:45 in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department at 100 E. German St.

Jan. 17 and 18: The Rumsey Radio Hour will be presented at 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday the 17th and at 2 p.m. on Sunday the 18th. This FOSL (Friends of the Shepherdstown Library) fundraiser is an old-style radio program that will be performed live onstage at Shepherd’s Marinoff Theater, 66 West Campus Dr. For tickets, visit the library at 100 E. Jan. 19: The library will be open from 10 to 7 and will offer a display of children’s books about civil rights from Jan. 16 through 19 to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.

Jan. 30: The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) Book Club will discuss We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler at 4 p.m. in the library.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Dec. 27

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a bird walk along the Final Attack Trail on the Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The walk is being cosponsored by the Washington County Bird Club, and it will be part of this winter’s Washington County Christmas Bird Count. The walk is free and open to anyone with an interest, regardless of their birding skills. Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not required. Easy registration is available on the Society’s website at www.potomacaudubon.org.

Participants should plan to meet walk leader Sandy Sagalkin at the Burnside Bridge at 8 a.m..

Jan. 1

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society invites its members and friends to join a New Year’s Day hike at Cacapon State Park in Morgan County. The hike is being sponsored by the park, and it will be led by the Park’s Naturalist, Renee Fincham. Participants will gather at 10 a.m. at the Park’s Nature Center. The hike will follow the Park’s Ridge Trail, which is about 1.5 miles long with a few hills. The hike will be free and no pre-registration is required.

Jan. 2

Fiddle Summit Showcase at 8 p.m.at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church. This annual concert presents some of the finest fiddlers from a variety of traditions, including Scandinavian, Klezmer, Irish, Scottish, New England and Appalachian into a showcase concert with some extraordinary accompaniment.

Jan. 17

Squeeze the Bag! Annual Bagpipe Showcase Concert at 8 p.m. in Reynold’s Hall. Four kinds of bagpipes will be featured: the Scottish smallpipe, the quieter cousin of the great highland pipes, the Irish uilleann (or Union) pipes, Northumbrian smallpipes and the Border pipes which are played in the border region between Scotland and England. Co-sponsored with the Upper Potomac Pipers Weekend. Classes available in many kinds of bellows blown bagpipes, flute, whistle and mixed-instruments. After a too-long- interval Rumsey Radio Hour is returning to Shepherdstown with performances at the beautiful new Marinoff Theater at Shepherd University on Saturday,with a 2 p.m. matinee and an 8 p.m. evening performance where beer and wine will be available, and Sunday, at 2 p.m. only. Tickets are on sale now at the Shepherdstown Public Library or on line at www.foslwv.org/ and are only $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. All proceeds will benefit the excellent programming at Shepherdstown Public Library. Seating is limited and these performances sell out so buy tickets now!
