Shepherd offers FASFA help to college-bound students
Anyone needing free, confidential help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will find it at Shepherd University during College Goal Sunday on Feb. 15 from 1-4 p.m. in Erma Ora Byrd Hall.
“College Goal Sunday is a great opportunity for students and families to receive free, professional assistance in filing their 2015-2016 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),” said Brian De Young, director of financial aid. “Many families have anxiety about completing the FAFSA correctly and College Goal Sunday is a great way for these families to sit down with a financial aid administrator to answer any questions they may have and guide them through the process step-by-step.”
De Young said anyone who needs to file a FAFSA for the next school year is welcome, including first-time students and those currently enrolled in college. No appointment is necessary. Staff from Shepherd’s Office of Financial Aid, Advising Assistance Center, and TRIO Student Support Services will be on hand to help guide students and their families in filling out the form, which takes about 30 minutes to complete.
Students and their families should bring the following documents:
Identification, such as a driver’s license
Your social security number
Parents’ social security numbers if you are a dependent student
Most recent tax records (2014 preferred, but 2013 is fine)
Your parents’ current tax records and return if you are a dependent student
Your spouse’s current tax records and return if you are married
Your untaxed income records, including child support, worker’s compensation, untaxed portions of pensions, and any other untaxed income you have received
Information about your or your parents’ investments and bank account balances
Alien registration or permanent resident card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
De Young said Shepherd traditionally serves 65 to 75 students and their families each year during College Goal Sunday.
