Shepherd lecture to explore girls’ education in Islamic society
“Girls’ Education in Islamic Societies: A Historical Overview” is the topic of lecture sponsored by Shepherd University’s Common Reading Program and the Shepherd University Foundation. Dr. Sara Scalenghe, associate professor of history at Loyola University, will give the talk on Monday, April 6, at 4 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies auditorium.
Scalenghe will explore whether Islam disapproves of education for girls. She will talk about the history of education for Muslim girls and women from the rise of Islam in the seventh century to current times and then will focus specifically on present day Pakistan and Afghanistan.
