The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd University presents San Jose Taiko
The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd University is proud to bring the Japanese thunder drumming of San Jose Taiko to the Frank Center Theater on Monday, April 13 at 8 p.m.
San Jose Taiko has been mesmerizing audiences with the powerful, propulsive sound of Japanese taiko drumming for more than 40 years. Performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the voice of the Taiko as they strive to create new dimensions in Asian American music and movement. The group has broadened this historical art form into a style that includes African, Brazilian, Filipino, Latin and jazz, while still resonating with the Asian soul in America. Company members study both contemporary and traditional dance with leading choreographers, producing performances that are extravaganzas of movement and music.
In addition to their performance on Monday evening, the group will conduct a free workshop (Introduction to the Art of Taiko) on Monday, April 13 at 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the stage of the Frank Center Theater. In addition to learning from the performers, workshop participants will have an opportunity to have hands-on experience with the drums. This workshop is open to community members of all ages. On Tuesday, the company will present a special performance for Shepherdstown Elementary School.
